As you may be aware there have been many dog shootings by cops because of fear and safety. The police officers do not want to kill the dog, but what other methods do they have, because they do not know if the dog is dangerous! Well, the Department of Justice reported that pepper spray should be used instead of a gun. Pepper spray is non-lethal, can shoot from a distance, and is very effective.
You may not think this is a huge issue, but in fact it is. The American Society reported that nearly 50 percent of times that a police officer fires their gun it is at a dog. This means that A LOT of dogs are being injured or killed unnecessarily when non-lethal means can be used, such as pepper spray, batons, and Tasers. Also, there is a reason that most postal carriers have dog mace on them or in their vehicle, because some dogs are aggressive. They simply shoot the pepper spray at the dog and it will usually run away.
We highly suggest pepper spray being used, and since it is a real problem, there is actually a dog pepper spray that has been on the market for years by one of the oldest pepper spray manufactures, Mace.
While other defense weapons are being considered, a baton would require very close range, which may risk the office being bit. Also, with a taser, if you do not hit the running dog once you may be out of luck!
As a closing note, I would like to keep this topic about animal safety and how to keep them and the police officers safe. It’s a fun fact that most police officers do own dogs so they are certainly not out their to shoot without a cause. I encourage you to comment below, or share this on your facebook or twitter. Thanks!
