We have received a lot of questions about pepper spray being carried by teachers, how it would protect against shootings, etc. We are going to try to address these concerns as we see fit. Please note, we offer our expert opinions regarding pepper spray and non-lethal self defense, we are going to leave the matter of guns to people that are more qualified about that subject.
As we all realize by now, in light of the recent horrible tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, and so many before that, we need a way to keep our schools safer. There are many advantages and disadvantages to each suggestion offered, whether it be additional lives at risk, cost, general safety, and many other factors.
Would pepper spray keep schools safer? Should teachers be armed with pepper spray? That is a question that a lot of people are asking right now. It could keep schools safer in general, and it would not hurt for teachers to be armed with pepper spray, but I do not believe it would prevent a school shooting, it may prevent further causalities though. Let me explain. In a recent news article, with a video reported by CNN, it is reported that the principal, Dawn Hochsprung, confronted and attempted to subdue the gunman. Would pepper spray have helped in that situation? Probably.
Pepper Spray is Non-Lethal. People talk about arming teachers with guns, how about pepper spray? Pepper spray is known for keeping a person safe in a personal, self defense situation without causing permanent damage. In a school environment this is ideal because no children would be harmed by the pepper spray.
Is pepper spray the BEST option available? I have no idea what the best available option is, we all have to figure that out together. However, as a backup, pepper spray would be a pretty good option.
What pepper spray would YOU recommend to be carried by teachers and staff? A pepper spray similar to what police carry, or of a police strength. Also, it would be ideal that the pepper spray shoots a distance from their desk to the door so that they can deploy it from where they are located and it hits them instantly. For instance, one pepper spray that we carry is the police magnum brand. It is a small, two-ounce canister that shoots up to 15 feet as a stream or shoots up to 12 feet as a fogger. The fogger version of this pepper spray would be ideal as it acts as a cloud-like pattern of pepper spray, essentially disabling the assailant from entering the classroom or general area without their eyes burning.
Like I said, pepper spray may not be the best option on the table, but it may act as a temporary safeguard. I was not going to write this article up, but I decided to because of the amount of questions and concerns that we have received, now I can easily reference this article rather than answering the general questions we have been receiving.
